Gilbert Shelton Hydrogen Bomb Funnies #1 Cover Original Art (Rip Off Press, 1970). Texas-born Gilbert Shelton was one of the first cartoonists to publish an underground comic in the wake of Robert Crumb's Zap Comix #1 with 1968's Feds 'n' Heads. His Hydrogen Bomb and Biochemical Warfare Funnies (as the cover reads) was an anthology title featuring Crumb, S. Clay Wilson, Kim Deitch, and others; it dared to buck the trend by charging $1 instead of the usual 50ยข cover price, making first printings hard to come by. Here's Shelton's cover art for that first (and only) issue, featuring three establishment figureheads the hippies all feared: Spiro Agnew, Richard Nixon, and the Rev. Billy Graham. The art is in ink over graphite on Bristol board, with an approximate image area of 11" x 15". Look closely and you can see the "mushroom cloud" bomb blast that would appear on the full-color printed cover, here covered up with whiteout. Very Good condition, with some minor stains and handling wear. Shelton added his signature in pencil along the bottom border. From the Eric Sack Collection.
