DescriptionGil Kane Alternate Unpublished All-American Western #122 Johnny Thunder Cover Pencils Original Art (c. 1951). Our consigner informs us, "The published version of this cover scene is almost line-for-line identical (with this piece). The big difference is the inking on Johnny Thunder's face, where it screams (Alex) Toth, yet the girl behind him screams (Gil) Kane. I asked both Kane and Toth years ago what they remembered, and Toth could not recall a thing. Kane did remember he penciled this in the fifties, but not if it was used. I suspect Kane penciled it, and that it may have been temporarily lost, and that Toth may have done the inking, working from a stat of these pencils." However this penciled cover came to be, it is without a doubt an outstanding vintage Johnny Thunder piece by Kane, and it has an image area of 13" x 20". The margins have been trimmed closely to the ruled borders, and a small portion of the lower right corner is missing; otherwise, it is in Excellent condition. Signed at the lower right.
