    Description

George Tuska and Frank Giacoia Iron Man #5 Cover Original Art (Marvel, 1968). Iron Man finds himself in a shocking situation as he confronts a laughing Cerebrus, in this way-cool Silver Age cover. The art as published was modified by pasting a touched up photostat of Iron Man on the art, moving the figure up about an inch to include room for the "Frenzy in a Far-Flung Future!" caption box. The artwork was professionally restored by Gordon Christman, removing the stat and cleaning up the areas that had been covered with whiteout to reveal the originally drawn and inked figure of Iron Man, which is all art. Mr. Christman did a great job, adding a small bit of reversible ink touch-up in a few places where the original ink was lightened by the whiteout. The paste-up image, with Iron Man's right foot angle slightly changed, has been saved and included as an acetate overlay, with the caption box added (a second stat of the box is also included). There is a light outline/indention on the artboard where the pasted-on stat was cut, and the board has a small amount of handling wear. The overall restored condition is Very Good, and the image area for the base art measures approximately 10" x 15". Iron Man #5 began Tuska's historic run on the title, and his Iron Man set the tone for an entire generation, creating the definitive look for Ol' Shellhead. This cover is Silver Age Marvel Magic as you like it, True Believers!

I have done a preliminary analysis and the total of the hammer prices was $67,550. With BP, the final figure was $80,722.25. That is against the total insurance value of $34,785 or 2.32 x ‘pre-auction estimate’. Incredible, really, so a big thanks.
