Description

Fred Rhoads (as George Baker) Sad Sack Laugh Special #27 Cover Original Art (Harvey Comics, 1965). Rhoads was the most dedicated ghost-artist ringer for Sad Sack's creator, Sgt. George Baker, capturing the authentic style with consistency and occasional brilliance. Rhoads out-does himself with this monumental composition -- suggesting, in the process, how influential Baker's style must have been on MAD Magazine's Don Martin, in terms of caricatured exaggeration. The original is framed alongside the published version. Most interesting to note the editorial liberties taken, including the moving of the signature; the correction of the spelling of Quartet (without a re-centering of the word); and the variant shapes of the musical notes. Ink over graphite on Bristol board. Image area, 14" x 18.5", framed 32" x 26.5". Excellent condition.
