Description

Fred Ray Superman #18 Hand Colored Cover Re-Creation Original Art (c. 1980s). It seems during World-War II, before the era of "smart bombs," the United States Army Air Corps called on the Last Son of Krypton to help them hit their primary targets. This hand painted re-creation by Fred Ray captures his unique and iconic cover scene originally done in pen and ink. The Golden Age great only rendered one fully executed re-creation of this show-stopping scene, and since the original pen and ink cover art has never turned up (presently not known to exist), this may be the closest opportunity you will ever have of obtaining the classic cover. Golden Age Batman legend Jerry Robinson (friend, peer, and admirer of Ray), has cited this cover image as among his favorites. Informed collectors know that Ray only did a very limited number of re-creations, and as a result, they are all highly sought-after by ardent Superman enthusiasts. Fred Ray's re-creation of his October, 1942 Superman #18 cover is an artistic bombshell. The image area of this cover re-creation, created with ink, tempera, and watercolor measures 16" x 19.5", and it has been matted, using archival materials, to an overall size of 22" x 26". Aside from some color fading on Superman's blue suit, the art is in Excellent condition.
