Frank Tinsley Bill Barnes Comics #1 and Air Trails Magazine Cover Painting Original Art and Related Magazines Group of 3 (Street & Smith Publ., 1938-40). The publisher got double-duty service out of Frank Xavier Theban Tinsley's dynamic, large-scale airborne image -- first on the pulp-fiction title Air Trails, and then on the groundbreaking Golden Age funnybook. In either setting, it's a knockout -- but the actual painting is a powerhouse all by itself. Tempera and opaque watercolors on illustration board.
