Description

Frank Frazetta Vampirella: 25th Anniversary Special (#nn) Cover Painting Original Art (Harris, 1996). The story behind the iconic character Vampirella is legend in the field. Jim Warren was the publisher behind Warren Publishing. In 1958, he, along with editor Forest J. Ackerman, launched the pop-culture classic Famous Monsters of Filmland. An admirer of the classic EC horror line, Warren launched Creepy and Eerie in 1964. He immediately recruited many of the top EC artists. The man Warren wanted to produce as many covers as possible was Frank Frazetta. Frank's iconic Warren covers have captivated a generation of fans. In 1969, Warren, influenced by the cult-classic film Barbarella, decided to launch a publication featuring a sexy sci-fi horror heroine. Vampirella quickly became an iconic character, and Frazetta played a significant role in popularizing the character. Frazetta's artwork for the cover of the first Vampirella comic book (#1, 1969) was instrumental in establishing her visual appeal and iconic status as it depicted Vampirella in her now-classic costume.
In 1996, as the new owner of Vampirella, Harris Publishing decided to commemorate the 25th Anniversary with a special issue. So they also turned to Frazetta for the cover. The image created was a celebration of a character that had not only captivated a generation of fans, but had also become a symbol of the fusion between horror, sci-fi, and fantasy in the comic book world. Frazetta's artwork for this special issue, like his earlier contributions, showcased his exceptional talent in bringing fantasy characters to life with a sense of realism and vitality. This painting features some great Frazetta elements beyond just the sensual woman in a striking pose; the setting and alligator take you back to an ancient time.
As with a number of other paintings throughout his career, after the painting was returned to Frazetta from the publisher, he decided to touch it up. This was c. 2000, as he was learning to paint with his left hand. The painting was professionally conserved in 2024. This includes the upper left and top center; the lower left (near the boot/signature); Vampi's hair; the center right edge; and the lower right corner. Created in oil on an 18" x 24" pressboard panel. Open-front framed to 23" x 29". Signed and dated 1996 in the lower left. In a restored Very Good condition.
From the Estate of Ray Skirsky
