Description

Frank Frazetta The Ghost Rider #5 (A-1 #37) Cover Original Art (Magazine Enterprises, 1951). The fourth and final Ghost Rider cover by Frazetta is quite possibly his most breathtaking! The only one to feature a classic Frazetta femme, it's rendered with all the allure that would become one of his hallmarks. The way the smoke from the outlaw's gun dissolves into the background like a visual echo adds both movement and tension. With his flowing cape and dramatic entrance, Ghost Rider nearly reads as a frontier-era Batman bursting through the frame. Frazetta's Famous Funnies Buck Rogers covers were still a couple of years away, but this piece already showcases the refined linework and cinematic flair that would define his finest work.
While the printed version certainly turned heads, it's only in person that Frazetta's delicate, feathery brushwork can truly be appreciated as some of that detail was muted by the rough pulp printing process. He began his comics career at just 16, and by 23 was already producing art so confident and kinetic, it still stuns decades later. Though celebrated as one of the most influential artists to emerge from comics, his time in the medium was brief, making each piece all the more treasured. His leap into fantasy and horror illustration in the 1960s cemented his icon status, but early works like this already reveal the precision and lavish detail that would become his trademark and go on to define an era.
Produced in near twice-up scale in ink and whiteout highlights over graphite on Bristol board with an image area of 12" x 17". Please note: the art is mounted to a separate backing board measuring 16" x 22", and exhibits restoration including cleaning, color touch over whiteout corrections and pinholes, and reproduction stats over the original logo and company paste-ups. The page presents with light toning, minor edge tear, light glue residue staining, chipped corner, minor smudging, and minor handling wear. Signed by Frazetta in the lower left image area. Presents in Very Good condition.
From the Keif Fromm Estate.
