Description
Frank Frazetta Luana US Movie Poster / Vampirella #31 Cover Original Art (Capital Productions, 1973/Warren Publications, 1974). The 1968 Italian release of Luana la figlia delle foresta vergine by Juventus Film was ready for a US release in 1973. Capital Productions turned to Frank Frazetta for a knock-it-outta-the-park painting for their movie poster and advertising publishing. It was 1972 and Frank Frazetta was producing some of his peak work.... At the Earth's Core, Silver Warrior, and Thuvia, Maid of Mars just to name a few. So Luana was in some great company!The decision came to release a novelized version of the movie (adapted by Alan Dean Foster) and Luana was used as the cover for the 1974 Ballantine Books paperback. And simultaneously, Warren Publications was releasing a 13-page adaptation of the story in Vampirella #31. So this painting was used for the cover of that issue as well. Between all of that coverage, and later reprints of the work as prints, posters, and in Frazetta art books, it is almost guaranteed that any Frazetta fan has seen (and marveled) at this gorgeous piece.
The subtlety, suppleness , and softness of the work can really only be fully appreciated by viewing the original painting itself, as printing techniques of the time simply could not capture that much magic. Luana's fierce form is obviously the eye-grabber here, but the detail work in the background, the chimp's expression, and the cats are equally breathtaking.
Created edge-to-edge in oil with a fixative layer on 24" x 30" canvas wrapped board. Signed and dated 1972 in the lower left.
But wait! ...there's more! This lot comes with a one-sheet movie poster, window poster, two counter standees, a copy of the paperback novel, and a copy of Vampirella #31. The original bill of sale signed by Frazetta is also included.
The painting has edge and corner wear and is in Very Good condition.
