Description
Frank Brunner Unknown Worlds of Science Fiction #4 Cover Original Art (Marvel Comics, 1975). Brunner's style is the closest Marvel has come to copping a classical EC Comics-like attitude, what with Brunner having absorbed and adapted the techniques of EC mainstays of Frank Frazetta and Graham Ingels, with traces of Wally Wood's influence. This stunning large-scale BEM scene (SF-talk for bug-eyed monster), with its Jekyll/Hyde mirror-image, heralded an issue of Marvel's short-lived foray into a finer grade of SF. Brunner designed the contoured high-ceiling area (top) to accommodate the magazine's logotype. Seen here in pure form without the logo, that ceiling enhances the depth (both physical and emotional) of the piece. Ink and mixed color media over graphite on Bristol board. Image area, 15" x 21".
