Dave McKean Sandman #12 Mixed Media Collage Cover Original Art (DC/Vertigo, 1990). Vertigo fans take note, here's the first Dave McKean cover we have offered, and it's a classic. New York Times best-selling author Neil Gaiman's transcendent series, Sandman, is often hailed as the definitive Vertigo title and one of the finest achievements in graphic storytelling. Dave McKean created an unforgettable iconography of the forces that exist beyond life and death by weaving ancient mythology, folklore and fairy tales into mixed media covers that also featured his own distinct narrative vision. In the "Doll's House" storyline, during Morpheus's incarceration, three dreams escaped the Dreaming and are now loose in the waking world. At the same time, a young woman named Rose Walker is searching for her little brother. As their stories converge, a vortex is discovered that could destroy all dreamers, and the world itself. The Dreamworld isn't big enough for the two Sandmen, leading to the final showdown between the both of them. This haunting collage -- made up of photographs, straight pins, and even sculptural elements such as a small skull, all augmented with detailed highlights -- was used to illustrate this montage scene for "Doll's House Part Three." The overall size of this surreal classic, which is matted and framed in a deep shadow box-style frame and ready to hang on the wall, is 15" x 18.5".
