Dave Gibbons The Comics Journal #116 Watchmen Cover Original Art (Fantagraphics, 1987). For many, the Watchmen 12-issue series represented a transcendent work of genius that showed how a comic book narrative could be constructed -- as well as a revolutionary take on a post-Cold War world that no longer worships superheroes. Watchmen was a turning point in comics history -- one of only a handful of stories that shattered the limits of what the medium could achieve. Visionary co-creator Alan Moore used the series to deconstruct the traditional superhero mythos in a manner never seen before, in a way that made the similarly-constructed film, Apocalypse Now, look like a picnic. The legendary depth of "pre-production planning" and tireless development of the creative process between writer Alan Moore and artist Dave Gibbons was laid out in a lengthy Comics Journal feature. Drawn and published concurrently with the series, this sensational vintage cover is done in the signature "still life" format of the iconoclastic saga's twelve covers and composed to create one of the iconic smiley faces that define the masterwork. The art has an image area of 13.5" x 18.5", is in Excellent condition, and signed at the lower left. A color printer's proof of the cover is also included.
