DescriptionDaniel Clowes The Death Ray - Eightball #23 Cover Alternate Version Original Art (2003). Daniel Clowes is universally lauded as one of the greatest contemporary cartoonists, and his hugely popular and influential series Eightball (published by Fantagraphics) is seen as one of comics' highest sustained achievements. Of the twenty-three issues of the series, #23 is the only instance where two fully realized covers were drawn. This is the art for the unused version, which was actually fully-colored and published in print for the issue's advance solicitation -- it was replaced by the sparer published cover image just before going to the printer only because it was decided that this artwork revealed too much of the contents within the comic. As such, the artwork offered here may be the single most detailed and comprehensive stand-alone image to be done for the comic. This art was subsequently published as a limited-edition letterpress print in 2004 and the full-color version was included in the artist's 2012 monograph The Art of Daniel Clowes: Modern Cartoonist, on page 208.
Inspired by Clowes's strong childhood interest in Steve Ditko's Spider-Man, The Death-Ray won Clowes a slew of awards, including the Harvey and Ignatz, as well as the 2005 Eisner Award for "Best Single Issue." The story was later republished in book form by Drawn & Quarterly; it has become one of the cartoonist's most popular and acclaimed stories. And it's important to note that none of the published artwork related to the story has ever been offered on the market. A number of examples can be seen in the currently touring museum retrospective "Modern Cartoonist: The Art of Daniel Clowes" at the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago, but this is the first to ever be offered for sale.
The art is in ink, graphite, and blue pencil on Bristol board, with an image area of 16.5" x 23", and is in Excellent condition.
