Description

Dan Adkins Strange Tales #164 Cover Doctor Strange Original Art (Marvel, 1968). This Marvel-ous twice-up scale image features Doctor Strange. Just as the master of the mystic arts was on the verge of taking over this title as his own (he did five issues later), he is currently on the verge of getting his own Marvel movie treatment as well... with Benedict Cumberbatch to play the role of Dr. Stephen Strange, the Sorcerer Supreme! This cover is created in ink over graphite on Bristol board with an image area of approximately 13.5" x 20". This was trimmed to the edges, then affixed to a Curtiss Way Cover Bristol board for production. The corner box and logo are original stats. The "Nightmare!" cover blurb was hand-lettered on a separate piece of Bristol, then the original art was cut in three places before being pasted down. There is glue residue from the paste-up in Yandroth's eye, and on Doctor Strange's hand, knee, and cloak. There is also a small spot of residue in the lower left corner. Dan Adkins initialed the artwork on the far left center of the image area. This is a humdinger of a cover with a fantastic design-sense! It reminds us of old science fiction pulp magazine cover layouts. Even with the glue residue, this baby has great eye-appeal and is in otherwise Excellent condition.
