Carl Barks - Original Preliminary Cover Art for Walt Disney's Uncle Scrooge #46 (Gold Key Comics, 1963). During his tenure as "The Good Duck Artist," it was a common practice for Carl Barks to submit several pencil preliminary sketches before settling on a final design for his Uncle Scrooge covers. That process is illustrated here, in a pencil prelim for what would become Uncle Scrooge #46, "Lost Under the Sea." All the elements that can be seen in the final cover are present here: the robot cop, the safe full of money, the mast of the sunken ship, as well as Donald, and Scrooge himself. This prelim, done in pencil on vellum, measures approximately 9" x 11.5" with an image area of approximately 7.25" x 10.25", and is in very good condition. There is some evidence of tape at the top of the piece, and a 1.5" x 5" chunk missing from the right edge, but neither of these defects affects the art in any way. Additionally, the piece is signed by Barks in the lower right corner. Only a handful of Barks' cover pieces are known to exist, making this a true rarity and a must for the avid Uncle Scrooge fan.
