DescriptionBobby London Air Pirates Funnies Tabloid Cover Original Art (Air Pirates Collective, 1972). The story of the Air Pirates art collective has been told many times over the years, but bears repeating here. Artists Dan O'Neill, Bobby London, Shary Flenniken, Ted Richards, and Gary Hallgren came together at a rock festival in 1970 and proceeded to get the world's attention with a satirical poke at Walt Disney and Mickey Mouse. Disney famously sued, and the case dragged on in courts for years. After two comic books published with Mickey Mouse as a drug runner on the cover, the group issued one final Air Pirates publication with an eight-page tabloid. This is Bobby London's original "political cartoon" cover to that tabloid, which poked fun at President Richard Nixon's trip to China. The art is in ink and whiteout over blue pencil on Bristol board, with an approximate image area of 11" x 11.5". Several elements were pasted-on art corrections (including Uncle Sam's arms and Nixon), leaving a few rubber cement stains. Good condition. A copy of Air Pirates Funnies Tabloid is included. From the Howard Greber Collection.
