Description

Bill (Will) Elder and Jack Davis Humbug #2 Cover Painting and Border Original Art and Print Group of 3 (Humbug Publications, 1957). Created by an off-branch of MAD magazine's 'Usual Gang of Idiots", Harvey Kurtzman's Humbug was a competitor of equal quality. Sadly, it only lasted for 11 issues, and this insanely detailed cover is one of the most iconic from the era. Robert Crumb has singled it out as hugely important and inspirational. The cover for the first three issues borrows the wacky border motif from early MAD. The logo and all border art was created by Jack Davis in extremely fine inkwork on illustration board with an image area of 10" x 15" (matted to 16" x 21". The main cover image was painted by Will Elder in grey tone gouache on illustration board, and signed in the lower right of the 10.75" x 16.25" image area. Matted to 16.75" x 22.25". These come with a matted copy of the printed cover, matted to 16" x 19.5". The art pieces are in Excellent condition. They mats have some corner dings.
From the Denis Kitchen Collection.
