Description
Bernie Wrightson Secrets of Haunted House #5 Cover Original Art (DC, 1973-75). This ominous jack-o'-lantern image -- larger by far than most DC cover-compositions of the period -- had originated as a symbolic speculative piece while Wrightson was occupied primarily with the development of his and Len Wein's career-making Swamp Thing serial. Rubber-stamp evidence (reverse) shows that the composition languished as a DC inventory item during 1973-74, until editor Joe Orlando retrieved it as a cover for his new Secrets of Haunted House, an assertive challenge to the Comics Code and its repressive censorship tactics (Orlando had roots in EC Comics' horror titles of the 1950s, and of course was eager to reclaim as much of that vibe as he could get away with). Wrightson's high-ceilinged page design was automatically ready for cover use, what with all that open black space ripe to accommodate a title logotype. Apart from the addition of color, Orlando's only alteration was to remove Wrightson's self-dated white-crayon signature: Can't have a 1973 date on a 1975 publication! A ghostly pencil-image on the reverse pictures a DC mystery-book character, the House of Secrets host known as Abel. Wet-brush ink over graphite on Bristol board, with an image area of 15" x 22.25".
