Painting Original Art (Marvel/Epic, 1985).A landmark cover by the master of modern horror. Offered here is the published cover painting to Epic Illustrated #30, executed in lush acrylics by Bernie Wrightson -- the artist whose name is synonymous with gothic draftsmanship and painterly mastery.
This image was not only the magazine's final issue (Feb. 1985), but also one of Wrightson's rare fully painted works for Marvel's Epic Illustrated line, making it a cornerstone opportunity for collectors. Wrightson's handling of paint is as commanding as his pen-and-ink.
The cover showcases his trademark chiaroscuro and meticulous textural realism -- qualities that made his Frankenstein illustrations (1983) instant classics. The imagery blends fantasy grandeur with gothic menace, distilled through Wrightson's cinematic composition.
On the board, the painting breathes with tonal depth and layered surface that no reproduction can capture.
Crafted in oil paint on illustration board with an image area of 18.5" x 24". Signed in the image area. The board has been affixed to a wooden backing board of the same size.
This cover has been professionally restored, including surface cleaning, removal of accretions and marks, re-sizing, and careful re-flattening of lifted corners. In Very Good condition, but presents in Excellent condition.
