Created as a preliminary while assisting close friend and future Studio mate Jeffrey Catherine Jones on the concept for a 1969 fantasy paperback cover, it already reveals Wrightson's instinct for the epic. The heroine and lion hew closely to Jones' final painting, while Wrightson channels his idol Frazetta's spirit, from its graceful curves to the sinewy power. Known for his inky mastery of horror and co-creating Swamp Thing, Wrightson's famed brushwork takes a back seat here to showcase his raw pencil precision. This rare fantasy piece is a thrilling glimpse into the macabre master's more mythic inspirations, where every detail roars with life. Rendered in graphite on Bristol board with an image area of 11.75" x 15". Light toning, smudging, and minor handling wear. Signed by Wrightson in the lower left image area and in Excellent condition.
