DescriptionBarry Smith Conan the Barbarian #9 Cover Original Art (Marvel, 1971). Barry Windsor-Smith's Conan the Barbarian was a real game changer for Marvel. Robert E. Howard's Conan stories were enjoying a growing popularity in the late 1960s and early 70s, thanks to a series of paperback books, and Marvel's Roy Thomas, a longtime fan of Howard's work, was eager to bring his Middle Earth character to the four color page. This new Conan series was a huge hit for Marvel, spawning many offshoot titles for the company, as well as many "sword and sorcery" imitations by other publishers. Barry Smith was an inspired artistic choice for Marvel's new series, and his intricate, stylized renderings made him an instant fan favorite. Here's one of his fantastic, detail-heavy cover images, filled with the deadly man-eating flowers from "The Garden of Fear," the book-length story for issue #9. The artwork is in ink and graphite on World Color Bristol board, with an image area of 10" x 15", and is in Very Good condition. The original masthead logo is taped in position, with additional detail added by Smith. The small flower designs surrounding the tower that Conan and ladyfriend Jenna are leaping from are a mosaic of printed patterns on paper, also taped (and glued) in position. There's also some minor handling wear along the outer borders.

I have done a preliminary analysis and the total of the hammer prices was $67,550. With BP, the final figure was $80,722.25. That is against the total insurance value of $34,785 or 2.32 x ‘pre-auction estimate’. Incredible, really, so a big thanks.View More Testimonials
