Description

Barry Smith Conan the Barbarian #5 Cover Original Art (Marvel, 1971). This memorable cover from the first year of Conan the Barbarian features Our Favorite Barbarian and Zephra, the daughter of Zukala, in mid-transformation into a tiger, for the aptly named story, "Zukala's Daughter," loosely inspired by the Robert E. Howard poem "Zukala's Hour." Barry Windsor-Smith's contributions to the success of the title are well-documented, and he is one of three artists regularly cited as being instrumental in the creation of the pop culture image of Conan, along with Frank Frazetta and John Buscema. This early image of Conan still has some of the Marvel "flourishes" to help establish a consistent (and thus easily duplicatable) look for the barbarian, including the front-facing horned helmet and the fur-clad loincloth. Created in ink over graphite on Bristol board with an image area of 10" x 15". The corner box, logo, and lower text are all stat paste-ups. The image of Zukala transmogrifying into a tiger is a production copy used to move her closer towards Conan. Original art touch-ups and white paint highlights on this copy piece. Held to a bright light or lightbox, the figure of the original art can still be seen below the copy and whiteout in that area. There is slight toning in places, more so in the photocopy and stat. The cover has been professionally cleaned. Signed by Smith in the bottom left image area. In Very Good condition.
