Barry Smith Conan the Barbarian #5 Cover Original Art (Marvel, 1971). Robert E. Howard's most famous barbarian faces "The Claws of the Tigress!" on this well-remembered cover. The Roy Thomas story was inspired by the Howard poem "Zukala's Hour". Barry Smith would be the defining artist on Conan for many years, regardless of whomever followed him. He helped set the look of Conan in the minds of fans for generations. This piece of original art has been in the same collection since 1972, when it was given as a gift by Marvel Comics to Glenn Lord, a prominent member of fandom and literary agent to the Robert E. Howard Estate. Signed by Smith at lower left. This cover was created in ink over graphite on Bristol board with an image area of 10" x 15". The corner box, logo, and lower text are all stat paste-ups. The figure of the leaping tiger/woman is a production copy used to move her closer towards Conan. Even so, there is original art touch-up and white paint highlights on this copy piece. Held to a bright light or lightbox, the figure of the original art can still be seen below the copy and whiteout in that area. There is slight toning in places, more so in the photocopy and stat. The cover has been professionally cleaned. In Very Good condition. From the Estate of Glenn Lord.
