Barry Smith Conan the Barbarian #4 "The Tower of the Elephant" Cover Original Art (Marvel, 1971). By Crom! In 1970, Barry Windsor-Smith burst onto the comic-book scene with his dynamic portrayal of Robert E. Howard's Conan the Barbarian, altering the course of the savage Cimmerian forever, and also establishing himself as one of the greatest comic artists to ever touch pencil to paper. For the fourth issue, "The Tower of the Elephant," adapted from the R. E. Howard story, Conan scales the Elephant Tower in the city of Arenjun in Zamora only to battle a monstrous spider. Here is nothing less than a "holy grail" cover from a super-early issue of Marvel's most popular Bronze Age title. With backgrounds as detailed as the main figures, you can see why Barry Windsor-Smith's evocative art, especially his covers, are so prized by collectors. This Marvel masterwork is sure to be the centerpiece of any cover collection. How could you hope to top it? This sword and sorcery show-stopper has an approximate image area of 10" x 15.5". The upper margin has been closely trimmed right to the art; there's some overall wear and light soiling; and note that all of the masthead, logo, and type elements at the top are carefully color-matched replacements; otherwise, the art is in Very Good condition.
