Antonio Prohias - Original Cover Art for The All New Mad Secret File on Spy vs. Spy Paperback (EC/Warner Publications, undated). Antonio Prohias was a Cuban cartoonist who fled the country in 1960 to escape Fidel Castro's new regime. Within a few months of arriving in New York, his trademark one page cartoons were introduced in Mad #60 and became an instant hit. His "Man in Black" and "Man in White" perfectly reflected the Cold War era in their constant struggle to overcome the other with neither one ever really coming out on top. Prohias' angular ink work was a perfect approach to his subject matter. This cover is a wonderful example of the ridiculous methods that the spies employed while apparently being oblivious to the fact that neither one could win. The figures are rendered in brushed ink and watercolor. The background color was created with rubylith which has slightly shrunk with age and has a few bubbles that don't detract from the overall appeal of the piece. This artwork is in excellent condition and measures approximately 8.75"x11.75" with a 6.25"x9.5" image area. The cover was used for the Warner paperback book edition..

I have done a preliminary analysis and the total of the hammer prices was $67,550. With BP, the final figure was $80,722.25. That is against the total insurance value of $34,785 or 2.32 x ‘pre-auction estimate’. Incredible, really, so a big thanks.
