La narration de ce troisième tome de la saga Conan le Cimmérien est issue d'une des meilleures nouvelles de Robert E. Howard. Ce dernier est, alors, en pleine possession et maturité de ses écrits sur Conan. Pas de jeune fille dévêtue à sauver, mais une histoire de colons et de mission punitive. Conan n'est que le catalyseur de l'histoire et malgré sa renommée rien ne semble pouvoir arrêter les Pictes. Riche et solide en événements et rebondissements, il n'y a pas de mièvrerie, ni de happy end dans cette histoire. On ressent le mal vivre de l'auteur et ce sentiment de dégoût de l'homme civilisé. The latter is, then, in full possession and maturity of his writings on Conan. No undressed young girl to save, but a story of settlers and a punitive mission. Conan is only the catalyst of the story and despite his fame nothing seems to be able to stop the Picts. Rich and solid in events and twists, there is no sentimentality, nor happy ending in this story. We feel the author's bad living and the feeling of disgust for civilized man. Anthony Jean, from whom we offer another magnificent painting in this catalog, illustrates coldly, but wonderfully, Robert E. Howard's Conan. Scars on his face, a sign of his past battles and his experience. Mature illustration with precise lines, coloring with dense backgrounds is just perfect! Perfect cover from a Conan at its best.
