DescriptionAl Williamson and Frank Frazetta Homage to Flash Gordon Illustration Original Art (c. 1953). The detail and softness in this huge piece just underscore what amazing professionals these two artists were, especially when working together.
We understand that this piece was a concept for a new feature that eventually became Captain Comet (not the DC character by that name, but the one that appeared in the Williamson/Frazetta story in Toby Press' Danger Is Our Business! #1, 1953). As you can tell, this was certainly an homage to Flash Gordon. Other similar studies were done that later appeared in the Space Heroes portfolio.
The piece is pictured in Comic Book Marketplace #51 (1997) and was used as the cover for the fanzine Art Fantastique #2 as well as the reprint book, Forbidden Worlds (Pure Imagination, 2009). Ink over graphite on illustration board with a large image area of 14" x 13.5". Slight tanning, some whiteout correction, and corner wear. In Excellent condition.
