Al Smith (attributed) - Original Cover Art for Mutt and Jeff #142 (Harvey, 1964). Credited as the first original comic strip with continuing characters, Bud Fisher's greatest creation first saw the light of day on November 15, 1907 in the San Francisco Chronicle. Originally titled A. Mutt (the "A" stood for Augustus), the strip focused on Mutt's love of sports gambling. Soon, however, the direction of the strip would change, when Jeff was introduced on March 27, 1908. From then on, the pair was inseparable and comics history was made. With a solid run in the newspapers, Mutt and Jeff also enjoyed popularity in comic books, being cover featured on Funnies on Parade, considered the very first comic book, and solid runs in their own titles from the 1940s through the mid-1960s. The cover offered here, from their Harvey run, is a lovely example of the gentle humor that made this pair so popular for several generations of fans. Measuring approximately 8.5" x 11" overall, the cover is in excellent condition, with some use of white-out. The title and logos are a recent recreation, but all else is original.
