DescriptionAl Avison Tomb of Terror #3 Cover Original Art (Harvey, 1952). Avison went from Golden Age prominence in the superhero genre (including The Whizzer and the post-Simon & Kirby Captain America), to postwar prominence as an architect of the comics' pre-Code horror boom. Avison's torturous cover illustrations defined Harvey's earlier chillers. This piece is a prime example -- an emblematic representation of a story called "Cavern of the Doomed!" The art appears to have gone through some rough handling in the production/engraving department, what with the collage-like layers of pasted logotype and art corrections, a loosely and unevenly applied contents box, and pencil marks cutting across the central figure. Ink over graphite on Bristol board, the image area is 12.75" x 18.75". Light toning and one line of text is missing from the contents box. There is a horizontal crease at the middle. Good condition.

I have done a preliminary analysis and the total of the hammer prices was $67,550. With BP, the final figure was $80,722.25. That is against the total insurance value of $34,785 or 2.32 x ‘pre-auction estimate’. Incredible, really, so a big thanks.View More Testimonials
