Will Eisner The Spirit Weekly "El Spirito" Complete 7-Page Story Original Art (Will Eisner Productions, 1948). Do you believe in ghosts? You just might after seeing this seven-page Spirit story, which originally saw print in newspapers dated February 1, 1948. Will Eisner has been quoted as saying, "1948 was the beginning of a good year for me and the studio. I was giving it (The Spirit) everything I had." Indeed, these pages are simply stunning -- every panel seems to be loaded with detail, and each page is better than the one before. The incredible underwater fight scene on page six is downright breathtaking! One of Eisner's great femme fatale villains, Castanet, is heavily featured; Eisner commented, "Castanet was my attempt to, once again, get a sexy woman into the story. I always found that girls with long hair who wore open front shirts were very sexy." Boy, he wasn't kidding! Her fate at the end of this story will, shall we say, "haunt" you for some time to come! This story was popular enough to be included in the first issue of Jim Warren's first magazine-sized issue of The Spirit in 1974, as well as a Spirit Special the next year (where Castanet made the cover).
The art is in ink over graphite with white ink and some Zipatone shading film on Bristol. These are huge pages, each with an approximate image area of 15" x 21". The pages edges have tape and/or tape residue, there is some minor soiling, and the boards have tanned a bit, but the images remain sharp; we'll give them an overall grade of Very Good. Mr. Eisner signed each page along the bottom edge. As a bonus (like you really need one), it comes with a copy of the Bill of Sale signed by Eisner, that defines the terms under which this piece was sold by him in 2004 for the sum of $15,000. For Will Eisner at his peak period, you can't go wrong with this story!
