Robert Webb and Iger Studio Brenda Starr Comics #13 (1) Unpublished 7-Page Story "The Darkest Destiny" Original Art (Ajax/Four Star, 1947). This orphaned story had been intended for an issue of Ajax/Four-Star's Brenda Starr funnybook series (a spin-off of Dale Messick's comic strip about a brave newspaperwoman). The tale offered here relates the historical tragedy of Floyd Collins, a casualty of an underground collapse in Kentucky in 1925. The focus is on journalist Skeets Miller, who sought in vain to rescue Collins. The Collins case and its extensive on-the-spot news coverage inspired an outpouring of legends and folklore, including a popular song of 1925-1926, "The Death of Floyd Collins." As a comic-book title, Brenda Starr had a shifting procession of publishers, with only two Ajax/Four-Star issues before lapsing to the affiliated Superior label in 1948. The pages, here, show the dominant drawing style of Robert Webb. The unusual text-and-dialogue font was created with the stencil-based Leroy Method (the same lettering system used by EC Comics). Ink over graphite with scattered white-paint retouching. Image area, 12" x 18.75". Toned, with handling wear, and in Very Good condition on average.More information about Robert Webb.
