Description
Robert Crumb Zap Comix #2 "Angelfood McSpade" Complete 4-Page Story Original Art (Apex Novelties, 1968). Taboo-busting is what Underground Comix art is all about. America in the 1960s was an uptight, ultra-conservative place to most of the post-WWII youngsters coming of age; free-thinkers in certain college campuses helped usher in a new era where sex was free, recreational drugs were okay, and everything their parents believed in was wrong. There were few taboo-busters quite as fearless as Robert Crumb, who wrongs a few civil rights with his outrageous jungle girl Angelfood McSpade. Crumb managed to mangle feminist and racial equality beliefs here, but that didn't stop the laughter this envelope-pushing four pager delivers! Crumb's ZAP pages are generally regarded as the most prized of his mammoth output.The art is in ink on paper (with little or no trace of graphite underneath), with an average per-page image area of 7.5" x 10.75". All four pages are framed together with Plexiglas, for an overall size of 40.75" x 15.5". There is some very minor handling wear, but overall, the art remains in Excellent condition. The story was featured in Yeah, But Is It Art?, a deluxe museum catalog book of R. Crumb art published in Germany, in 2004. From the Eric Sack Collection.
