Robert Crumb Zap Comix #0 "Freak Out Funnies" Complete 2-Page Story Original Art (Apex Novelties, 1968). When Robert Crumb arrived in San Francisco in January, 1967, he wasted little time chasing his dream of being a professional cartoonist. Rather than going the mainstream route with Marvel or DC, Crumb initially sold his strips to alternative "hippie" newspapers across the country. These were well-received strips that combined Crumb's love of old-fashioned "big foot" style cartooning with the carefree attitude of the young people around him, and Underground Comix were born. Building on that rush of popularity, he concocted his first actual "comic book," in October, 1967, a 24-page b&w issue with color covers, titled Zap Comix #1. He sent the originals off to the publisher of one of the out-of-town papers that had printed his work, but somehow the art was lost; without missing a beat, Crumb finished up a second issue, making it #1. This time, he got it out through a local printer and it sold well enough to do a second issue, and then a third (this time with other like-minded artists like S. Clay Wilson). When a set of good photocopies from that original "lost" issue surfaced, he added a few more pages and put them out as Zap #0, late in 1968. Making this story not only some of the most prized of his Zap Comix output, but also some of the earliest produced Zap pages to ever come to market.
"Freak Out Funnies" from Zap #0 introduced two important characters -- Angelfood McSpade, his politically incorrect jungle woman, and Mr. Snoid, a strange little guy inspired by a "bad acid trip." The art for this two-pager is in ink over very light pencils on paper or thin board; each page has an approximate image area of 7.75" x 10.25", both framed to an overall size of 16" x 20.75". Other than very minor handling, the condition is Excellent. The pages were featured in Yeah, But Is It Art, a lavish 2004 museum catalog book of R. Crumb art published in Germany. From the Eric Sack Collection.
