Robert Crumb Zap Comics #1 Complete 1-page Story "Definitely a Case of Derangement!" Original Art (Apex Novelties, 1968). For Underground Comix fans, here's where it all begins. This is the inside front cover to R. Crumb's Zap Comics #1, the cultural equivalent to the Hydrogen Bomb, as far as the impact this historic comic book made on the American landscape. The comic is notable for a number of firsts -- the first true Independent comic, the first solo Crumb comic, and the beginning of the Underground movement that launched many careers. After the nostalgic "Diddy Wah Diddy" cover art, here's where things start to get subversive. The "raving lunatic" pictured here is none other than R. Crumb himself, in one of the first times he used his own image as a comic strip character. In fact, the page (dated November, 1967) was drawn not long after Crumb hitched a ride from Cleveland to San Francisco, leaving behind a wife and secure job at American Greetings, where he did color separations and designs for greeting cards. It was the start of a movement that has since carried Crumb to worldwide fame and recognition. This is, without a doubt, the most important page of R. Crumb art that Heritage has offered to date. A copy of Zap #1 (third printing) is included.
