Robert Crumb Yarrowstalks #2 "Head Comix" Complete 1-Page Story Original Art (Yarrowstalks, 1967). R. Crumb's first use of the title "Head Comix", and a collection of some of his best recurring characters all on one page never before offered at auction!
It was July 1967 in Philadelphia... the Summer of Love, and Underground Comix history was about to be made. A fertile period for Undergrounds in general, with over 100 new titles coming to press, but it was also a fertile period for one of the genre's leading contributors... R. Crumb. Having just moved to San Francisco, Crumb was contributing to several underground newspapers, including Philly's Yarrowstalks. He had already created a fairly large stable of his own characters, and this complete single-page story from that high water mark is the definitive first published use of the "Head Comix" title. The page features two panels containing very early examples of Crumb's iconic Keep on Truckin' imagery, the cultural critiques and existential yearnings he became most celebrated for, as well as the earliest appearances we've ever offered (and among the first ever in print) of many of the classic characters he would go on to use for years. Included are Mr. Natural, Angelfood McSpade, Mr. Snoid, Eggs Ackley, Snappy Bitz & Krazy Krax (sometimes known as Simp & the Gimp), Ole Pooperoo, Jesus, and even Those Cute Little Bearzy Wearzies! An amazing page stuffed with 36 panels of characters! And if that was not enough, the art is absolutely stunning, with each panel a masterclass in cartooning, foregrounding Crumb's hallmark style, trademark cityscapes, and world-famous iconography.
A few more "Head Comix" pages were published in 1967, which eventually lead to the 1968 book R. Crumb's Head Comix by Viking Press. Due to the adult content in the second tier of panels, even when this strip has been reprinted it has sometimes been censored and/or that second tier was edited out.
In short, this highly detailed masterpiece is a peak-period summation of not only all of Crumb's revolutionary art-thus quintessential Crumb-but a talisman of the entire Underground revolution in American art and culture! The incredible artwork also represents a very rare find, as it has resided in the same collection since the late 1960s, thus never appearing before at auction -- exactly the type of discovery that excites us the most!
Created in ink over graphite, this piece has been glass front framed out to 17.75" x 21", with a matted image area of 11" x 14". There is a minor stain in Panel 15 and the edge of Panel 30. In overall Excellent condition.
Hey Boparee Bop! Pure poetry from one of the greatest comic artists of all time!
Provenance: From an Important East Coast Collection.
