    Description

Robert Crumb The Heap Years of the Auto - 1946-59 3-Page Story Original Art (c. 1964-65). A three-page magazine article, with typeset text credited to "Bob Crumb", including eighteen individual exaggerated drawings of those types of big American cars later nicknamed "heaps", plus a funny drawing of a Heap surrounded by smaller, import cars, on the last page. This story was prepared for Woody Gelman's aborted Nostalgia Illustrated magazine project, although there is a report that Crumb and his American Greetings associate John Gibbons had a similar article published in the Cleveland Plain Dealer in 1964, and it's entirely possible that some of the drawings were reused for this piece, as most of the individual car drawings are pasted on the layout board. This newer article may not have surfaced until it was included as part of a lengthy illustrated interview in the Underground prozine, Promethean Enterprises #5, which was published in 1973. Each page of this article is laid out on illustration board, with an image area of approximately 12" x 15". The type is beginning to turn brown; in fact, one car title has since slipped off (on page three, for the 1959 Cadillac), and there are several stains on the third page that have lightly warped the paper that has been affixed to the illustration board; fortunately, the drawings still look pretty good. Overall, we're calling this Very Good condition.
