Robert Crumb Remember Keep On Truckin'? Complete 1-Page Sketchbook Story with Nixon Caricature Original Art (c. 1970). Here is Crumb's rehearsal for a more detailed version (same title) that saw print in 1972's XYZ Comics, with an encore presentation in 1997's The R. Crumb Coffee Table Art Book. Crumb's first iteration of "Keep on Truckin'" had appeared in the Underground watershed Zap Comix (1967), sporting five images of snazzy people strutting (or truckin') across an urban landscape. The opening panel became a symbol of defiant confidence among hipsters -- reproduced (without appropriate permissions) on products ranging from T-shirts to bumper stickers. Crumb's inspiration had been a 1937 recording by the blues singer Fulton "Blind Boy Fuller" Alton, "Truckin' My Blues Away." Crumb himself grew uncomfortable with the popularity of his creation, saying: "This stupid little cartoon caught on hugely... I didn't want to turn into a greeting-card artist for the counterculture." Hence the present page of drawings, in which Crumb razzes his famous image with suggested variations upon the phrase. President Richard M. Nixon appears in caricature, solemnly declaring, "I say we must keep on trucking." A flip-side page of drawings shows a tableside gathering and two guitarists. Spontaneously applied pen-and-ink on toned sketchbook stock. Dimensions, 6.75" x 8.5", glass-front framed to 13.25" x 15". Frame wear. Very Good condition.
