Reed Crandall Valor #3 Complete 7-Page Story "Debt of Honor" Original Art (EC, 1955). This seven-page story of King Richard the Lionhearted and his failed quest to capture Jerusalem features not only terrific art by Reed Crandall, but shows just how much EC's hands were tied by the 1955 Comics Code Authority, which demanded changes on page 5 (Richard being hit with a flail, a spiked ball and chain), and in the final two panels page 7, where a traitor is "rewarded" with gold -- the published art showed only curtains, while the original page reveals, in shadows, the man's head being held back, and a soldier pouring molten gold as he screams in terror. Even though these scenes are not graphic in nature, the Code would not allow them, and even modern reprints use the censored version. The art is in ink over graphite on EC Bristol board, with an average image area of 13" x 18". There are old glue stains where the replacement art was removed over the censored panels, with the usual amount of handling wear in the outer borders, and a type correction missing in the first page; otherwise, the art is in Excellent condition.
