Description

John Romita Sr. Vampire Tales #2 Satana First Appearance Complete 4-Page Story Original Art (Marvel, 1973). Wow. What a stunning introduction to the Devil's Daughter, Satana Hellstrom, and much of its impact comes down to John Romita, who draws an absolute knockout. Before leaving his mark on The Amazing Spider-Man, Romita was already well versed in multiple genres, including romance, experience that gave him an unmatched elegance in depicting women, and it shows here in full force.
Romita masterfully builds suspense across the first two pages with scarcely a word of dialogue, relying instead on ominous sound effects, cinematic angles, and tightly framed close-ups that heighten the tension with a filmic flair. Though briskly told across four pages, the payoff is immense. A grizzled man stalks a woman through the city streets into a shadowy alley, where she plays the frightened victim until he makes his move. Then the guise falls away: having lured him into her trap, Satana drains his life and claims his soul. With her stunning beauty finally revealed, his last act on Earth may well have seemed worth the price.
But it was only the beginning. As the younger sister of Daimon Hellstrom, Satana would become a recurring fixture in Marvel's supernatural corner, weaving in and out of horror anthologies, Hellstrom lore, and later team books like Thunderbolts and Legion of Monsters.
Ink and white paint highlights over graphite on onion skin panels affixed to Bristol boards, themselves mounted to illustration boards, with combined image areas of 10.5" x 15". Acetate overlays with reproduction text, credits, sound effects, and teaser paste-ups are taped along the top edge, many arranged differently than in the published version, with a couple absent altogether, including sound effects and the "Finis" at the end. The margins, gutters, and portions of the negative space have been painted white, with only the final page left not fully painted. The panels are toned, and there is a visible tear across Panel 1 of Page 2. Creasing at both lower corners of Page 3. Each page is signed by Romita Sr. in the lower right margin. Overall, in Good condition.
