Description

Jay Lynch Silent Celery Complete 1-Page Story Original Art (1966). Lynch, a Chicago-based founder of the Underground Comix movement, crafted this large-scale, mind-boggling page a few years before his rise to prominence with Bijou Funnies and the Nard n' Pat stories. A surreal exercise in illustrated Beat poetry, the piece called "Silent Celery" is undocumented as to any publishing history but bears the signature/year at lower right. Pop-cultural references include Buddy Holly; Ernie Bushmiller's comic strip Nancy; and characters from John Van Druten's famous play/movie/teleseries, I Remember Mama. Ink over graphite on lightweight sketch-pad paper, with Zipatone shading and painted white highlights. Image area, 14" x 20.25". Age toning and horizontal creases from folding. Good to Very Good condition. From the Eric Sack Collection. From the Eric Sack Collection.
