    Description

Harvey Kurtzman and Will Elder Playboy June 1982 Little Annie Fanny Complete 3-Page Story Original Art, Preliminary Art, and Reference Materials Group of 22 (HMH Publishing, 1982). During the 26 years that Kurtzman wrote the Little Annie Fanny strip for Playboy, Hugh Hefner allowed him to travel for research, photography, and sketching. It seems Kurtzman must have caught the Chicago Knockers all-female Mud-Wrestling team at some point. They inspired this 3-page story. Included are the finished three pages with Will Elder's dense, lush color work in oil paint, tempera, and watercolor washes. The image areas average 10.5" x 15" on these illustration boards. Also included is a printed article from The Plain Dealer about the Chicago Knockers, along with a team photo (and several pages of notes that Kurtzman appears to have taken during the match). The production process for the pages is well represented with three pages of Kurtzman's own rough layouts in ink on graph paper with sample dialog, three hand-painted color rough layout pages to work out color placement, and seven pages of detailed panel layouts in ink on onionskin paper. Toss in the three tear sheets of the printed story and you have examples of the process from end-to-end. All of the original art pages are signed by Harvey Kurtzman with his characteristic mark. Some of the roughs have minor rips in the edges and there are bits of production tape on some pages. The final fully painted art pages are in Excellent condition. From the Eric Sack Collection.
