George Evans The Haunt of Fear Complete 7-Page Story Original Art (EC Comics, 1953). Evans' horror classic, "Gorilla My Dreams," takes its cue from any number of movies and pulp-fiction yarns about brain-swapping between apes and humans. Writer Al Feldstein once told us he was inspired by Paramount Pictures' The Monster and the Girl (1942), an unusual film noir featuring a tragic, humanized gorilla. It also bears noting that this EC gem appeared in print almost simultaneously with DC Comics' Batman #75, in which the title hero battles the mind-switched menace of "The Gorilla Boss of Gotham City!" (There are no coincidences.) The present story takes the prize for superior artwork, highlighted by Evans' inimitable way of making the characters' eyes appear to glow, and by a deeply mournful narrative quality. Ink over graphite on Bristol board. The image area measures 13" x 18", with light toning and minimal adhesive staining. The Vault of Horror logo and the cameo of the Vault Keeper are photostats, pasted in place. Excellent condition.
