Al Jaffee MAD #93 Complete 3-Page Story "A Child's View of Newspaper Headlines" Original Art (EC Comics, 1965). The inspiration runs deep: Prof. Alexander Abingdon and Dr. Seuss had collected many hilarious misperceptions from essays by schoolchildren in a series of 1920s-'30s books called Boners and More Boners. Art Linkletter had built upon the tradition during the 1950s-'60s with Kids Say the Darnedest Things! From such springboards, writer-artist Jaffee imagined how some little kid might misinterpret a newspaper's headlines: "Guerrillas Attack on Plain of Jars," "Braves Sweep Giant Double-Header," etc. "Not conscious humor," as Abingdon would write, "but charming misperceptions of fact." Yes, well, and humor is in the eye of the beholder, and this array demonstrates vividly why Jaffee has long been essential to the longevity of MAD. Ink over graphite, ink wash, white watercolor, and collage effects on heavyweight illustration board. Image area, 16" x 22". Very Good to Excellent condition, with light-to-moderate toning and some loosening in the typeset areas. From the MAD Collection of Annie Gaines Ashton.
