    Description

Woody Kimbrell (as Marge) Little Lulu Daily Comic Strip Original Art dated 9-6-58 (Chicago Tribune-N.Y. News Syndicate, 1958). Kimbrell brought to Lulu a great consistency with the series' comic-book stylists, John Stanley and Irving Tripp, while contractually obligated to sign his work in the pen-name of creator Marjorie Henderson Buell. Kimbrell also channeled the influence of Ernie Bushmiller, whose comic strip Nancy was a contemporary feature. This example distilled all those influences into a brilliantly conceived visual gag, with a surprising punch-line. It remains a mystery why Kimbrell chose to draw on expensive Craftint page-stock without activating its intrinsic chemical-shading properties. Ink over graphite on DuoTone Craftint. Image area, 19.75" x 6". In Very Good condition, with toning, soiling, staining, and handling wear on the edges. From the Ray Edw Collection.

I have done a preliminary analysis and the total of the hammer prices was $67,550. With BP, the final figure was $80,722.25. That is against the total insurance value of $34,785 or 2.32 x ‘pre-auction estimate’. Incredible, really, so a big thanks.
