Description

Wesley Morse Bazooka Joe #2-31 Comic Strip Original Art (Topps Gum, 1950s). After Popeye the Sailor, the most famous one-eyed character in comics was Bazooka Joe, who ran neck-and-neck with rival Fleer Dubble Bubble Gum's pitchman, Pud, in a race to attract an audience of gum-smackers. (Fleer had started the gum-wrapper comics craze in 1930, with the adventures of Dub & Bub. Topps had prefaced Bazooka Joe during the 1940s with the Atom Bubble Boy comics.) Morse's rambunctious Bazooka Joe funnies are tiny masterpieces of slapstick. Ink and collage technique on Bristol board. The image area measures 8.5" x 3.75" with some sections pasted to a backing board, and glue staining where lettering is missing. Professionally matted.
