V.T. Hamlin Alley Oop Daily Comic Strip Original Art dated 12-12-38 (NEA Service, Inc., 1938). Hamlin was on the verge of a fundamental change in the narrative nature of Alley Oop when he delivered this confrontational encounter between caveman Oop and an equally prehistoric rival. Fact is, everything was prehistoric in Alley Oop, what with its setting in ancient times in a land of dinosaurs and primitive humankind. In less than a year, Hamlin would revolutionize Alley Oop by daring to introduce a science-fictional time-travel device -- enabling Oop to dart back-and-forth across the ages with his rambunctious sense of adventure. Hamlin's mastery of dimensional composition is evident throughout this episode: The illusion of depth and distance derives from Hamlin's combined observations of theatrical stage-design technique, on the one hand, and the 19th-century engravings of Gustave Doré, on the other. Ink over graphite on Bristol board. Image area, 20.5" x 5". Lightly toned, with a center crease for mailing or file storage. Very Good condition.From the Bobby G. Murphy Collection.
