Description

Vaughn Shoemaker When the Cat's Away Editorial Comics Panel Original Art (Chicago Daily News, 1940s). Pulitzer medalist Shoemaker crystallizes a central conflict of World War II, depicting Nazi thug Hitler as a tomcat distracted by the temptation to wreck England, while Soviet rat Josef Stalin threatens the strategic Eastern Bloc Balkan territories of Continental Europe. The wartime treacheries would persist beyond the formally recognized war, intensifying Cold War hostilities. Shoemaker's gift for metaphorical depictions combines with his bold wet-brush inking to create an image that treads a fine line between humor and horror. The piece is inscribed to fellow cartoonist Morris "Morrie" Weiss. Ink over graphite on Bristol board. Image area of 14" x 16". Toning commensurate with age. Light handling wear. Excellent condition.
