V. T. Hamlin Lindbergh Kidnapping Comic Strip Original Art (1932). In his documentary account of a cause celebre, we find Hamlin practically inventing the true-crime comics genre, a decade before such material would erupt as a comic-book publishing sensation. Pre-dating the start of his caveman strip Alley Oop by several months, the piece is not only the earliest Hamlin job we have offered -- but also a unique effort in a career otherwise devoted to boisterous humor and high adventure. Hamlin was between steady jobs at the time, having left newspaper/magazine positions in Texas to resettle as a freelancer in his Iowa hometown. The abduction of aviator Lindbergh's infant son struck a sympathetic chord in Hamlin, as a new father himself. His dramatization captures the urgent early stages of the investigation, anticipating a tragic conclusion. Later on in 1932, Hamlin would launch Alley Oop, an unusual and long-running foray into prehistoric fantasy and science fiction. The present work demonstrates Hamlin's instinctive ability to convey depth in a two-dimensional composition. The ink-over-graphite Bristol board shows staining, with occasional paper loss, visible on the scanned image. Two tiers are conjoined with tape, with additional patchwork construction, on a backing sheet. Essentially intact, however, at 18" x 23", and in Fair condition.More Information: Edit: To modify punctuation...
