Description

Tom Ryan Tumbleweeds Sunday Comic Strip Original Art dated 6-13-82 (Field Enterprises, 1982). Ryan's deadpan wit dominates this confrontation between bored cowboy Tumbleweeds and smarty-pants gambler Ace DeSilk. The tobacco-chewing horse, Epic, has the last word (or the last sound effect) in the altercation, but Tumbleweeds delivers a desultory punchline, anyhow. Ink over graphite on Bristol board. The direct influence on Jim Davis' Garfield is patent: Davis was Ryan's assistant during 1969-78. Dimensions, 22" x 10", matted out to 28" x 17" with a hand-drawn faux-frame border. The inking is actually a matter of mixed media, inasmuch as Ryan used Higgins Black for the main figures and chose a water-soluble felt-tip marker for the backgrounds. The marker-ink has faded to a reddish hue as a natural consequence of aging and exposure to ambient light. Otherwise in Excellent condition.
