Description

Stookie Allen Men of Daring Comic Strip Original Art (New York Daily Mirror, c. 1940s). A beautifully drawn episode from the comical life of Bill Dineen, one of the great umpires of early-day baseball. Allen, versatile and prolific, designed his vertical strip in the manner of Robert Ripley's Believe It or Not! -- consistent with other such Allen series as Illustrated Crimes. The husband of trailblazing cartoonist Gladys Parker (creator of the gag strip Mopsy), Allen also worked extensively in the pulp-fiction market and appeared in many comic-book titles from DC and Dell. This piece is personally inscribed. Ink over graphite on pebble-grain coquille board. Image area, 7.5" x 13.5". Light toning. Excellent condition.
